Course Purpose:
Due to responses from installations that bird banding training is needed to assist with performing bird monitoring projects, the DoD Legacy Program is funding an in-person bird banding training hosted by Klamath Bird Observatory. The 5-day bird banding workshop will focus on learning new, and refreshing old, bird banding skills.

Course Description:

Topics covered include advanced songbird ageing and sexing techniques using molt, plumage, skulling, and other criteria; bander safety; bird safety and first aid; public interaction and education at banding stations, and equipment maintenance; and brief introductions to alternative remote monitoring techniques, such as MOTUS tags, telemetry devices, etc. This workshop will focus on reinforcing and enhancing skills learned in the 101 workshop, with an emphasis on experiential learning and hands-on practice.

This Banding workshop will be designed based on the North American Banding Council (NABC) curriculum and guidelines and will be offered by NABC certified trainers.

The workshop will involve seminars, demonstrations, and experiential learning. This training session will take place over five days. First day will be an evening introduction and planning session for the remainder of the week. The remaining four days will be a mix of field activities and classroom instruction. Participants should arrange travel to ensure attendance for all aspects of the workshop.

There is no cost for this training except for participant travel expenses.
