DOW AKN Avian Data Questionnaire

Purpose & Objective:
In support of the Department of War (DOW) Avian Knowledge Network (AKN) Implementation Directive, this questionnaire is designed to catalog and baseline all avian monitoring datasets across DOW installations.

How This Helps You:
The information you provide directly enables the DOW AKN Program Team to support your installation’s data management needs. By understanding the format, history, and structure of your records in advance, our technical team can provide tailored onboarding assistance, identify custom migration workflows, and help streamline your data entry ahead of compliance deadlines.

The more detail you provide about your existing records, the more efficiently our team can assist you.

SECTION 1: INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Use the form below to provide information about you, your installation, and avian data at your installation, generally. In Section 2, you will be asked to provide details about individual datasets.
Enter your full name.
Enter your official work email address.
If you have multiple installations under your purview, please submit separate forms for each installation.
Do you collect contemporary avian monitoring data at this installation?
Contemporary data are those being collected currently (e.g., on-going annual monitoring). This can also include surveys that are conducted repeatedly at some reasonable iteration (e.g., baseline inventory surveys every 3-5 years). This can include data collected internally by installation staff or through contractors/cooperators.
Do you have historic avian monitoring data previously collected at this installation?
Includes any surveys that were conducted in the past that are no longer on-going (e.g., one-off projects)
Does your data include any of the following?

SECTION 2: AVIAN DATASET DETAILS

Use the form below to provide information about individual avian datasets at your installation. If you have more than one dataset, at the end of this form, you can click “ADD ANOTHER DATASET.”

AVIAN DATASET DETAILS

Provide a clear, recognizable project or survey name (e.g., “2019-2022 Grassland Bird Surveys”, “Annual Burrowing Owl Nest Monitoring”).
Provide a brief description of the dataset (e.g., primary objective(s), target species, general survey location on the installation, etc. (1–3 sentences).
What kind of data is included in this dataset?
Is this dataset already entered in the AKN?
Select Yes if some or all of this dataset is already entered into your installation’s AKN Project.
If Yes, is the dataset complete in the AKN?
Select Yes if the entire dataset you are describing is entered into you installation’s AKN Project.
Who collected these data?
Select whether this survey was conducted by internal military/civilian staff or an external entity (e.g., contractor, co-op agreement, state agency).
Is this dataset contemporary or historical?
Contemporary datasets are those being collected currently (e.g., on-going annual monitoring). Historic datasets include any surveys that were conducted in the past that are no longer on-going (e.g., one-off projects).
Specify the range of survey years (e.g., “2018–2022”; “2020–Present (Ongoing)”).
Do you have the raw data (or the ability to obtain it from a contractor/collaborator)?
Select Yes if you have observation-level records in hand or have the ability to retrieve raw data files directly from a contractor/collaborator.
What format are the data in?
Check all file types that apply to this dataset. If the data only exists as summary tables or charts inside a PDF report, select Reports Only.
Do you have written field methodologies and/or example datasheets?
Select Yes if you possess or have access to a written field methodology, whether internally documented or externally-published (e.g., “Survey Protocol for the Western Distinct Population Segment of the Yellow-billed Cuckoo”).
Do you have exact sampling locations where surveys occurred?
Select Yes if you have specific geographic coordinates (Lat/Long, UTMs), GIS layers, maps, etc.
If yes, what format are the sampling locations in?

Form Completion

Only hit submit once all known avian datasets at this installation location have been recorded in the form above. Use the “ADD ANOTHER DATASET” button if you need to add more (up to 15 datasets)
