DoW Advanced Bird Banding 201 Workshop Registration

Welcome to the registration page for DoW Advanced Bird Banding 201 Training being held in-person at Klamath Bird Observatory’s Banding Station, Grant’s Pass Oregon, 27 April-1 May 2026. The proposed training schedule is as follows, plan your travel accordingly:

Course Purpose:
Due to responses from installations that bird banding training is needed to assist with performing bird monitoring projects, the DoW Legacy Program is funding a 5-day advanced bird banding 201 workshop focused on passerines. This workshop is intended for DoW installation personnel who have already completed the introductory banding 101 course or have equivalent experience, and work on current or proposed projects that require banding and are interested in training that will aid in obtaining a banding permit.

Course Description:
Topics covered include advanced and hands-on approaches to developing, strengthening, and reinforcing skills that were introduced in the banding 101 workshops: songbird ageing and sexing techniques using breeding condition, molt, plumage, skulling, and other criteria; bander safety, bird safety, and first aid; public interaction and education at banding stations; and equipment maintenance. Detailed instruction will also include using Pyle Guide (Part I 2nd edition); Wolf, Ryder, Pyle aging system; avian molt strategies; morphometrics; band application, adjustment, and removal; mist net set up, handling, and maintenance; permits & regulations; NABC and other resources for banders; and more.
This Banding 201 workshop will be designed based on the North American Banding Council (NABC) curriculum and guidelines and will be offered by NABC certified trainers and will include seminars, demonstrations, and experiential learning.

There is no cost for this training except for participant travel expenses.

Travel Information: 
For attendees that need to travel by plane, Rogue Valley International Medford (MFR – 30 miles east of lodging location) is the closest airport. Eugene Airport (EUG – 150 miles north) is another option.

Lodging is being held at the Lodge at Riverside Inn in Grant’s Pass, OR. To book a room, please contact the Inn directly at (541) 955-0600 and ask for a room in the workshop block (“Klamath Bird Observatory DoW Bird Banding Workshop”). All rooms are available at the federal per diem rate ($110/night).
